A Small Part of a Big Network Coverage Expansion Project ​

As the demand for ICT services rises, higher and higher energy consumption expect for mobile radio networks. Explosive growth in mobile Internet traffic is pushing telecommunication companies to search for new techniques to improve the energy efficiency throughout the mobile network - particularly in a base station.

Based on an analysis from Vodafone, network operators are spending an estimated $2 billion annually to power their networks, and base stations are consuming a high proportion of the tight budget. [1]

The Challenge

A local telecommunication company has at least 2.5 million mobile network user bases, which is amount to 50% of their business. It is essential to have measures in place to provide a better cellular coverage, continuation core network services and to ensure to minimize any occurrence of disruptions. They are also looking for ways to reduce energy consumption at their mobile base stations.

At mobile base stations, the grid-supplied power that comes into the stations is in alternative current (AC). Connecting to AC power grid will result in cumulative conversion losses and waste heat, which will need additional cooling systems. This’ more costs will incur to supply the cooling systems.

The company has numerous base stations throughout the country; such stations have always equipped with backup power sources. However, it was using an older technology that does not address effectively respond to power disruptions.

The Solution

Beaqon is appointed to provide and install direct current (DC) rectifier systems and power backup to their numerous mobile base stations throughout the country.

Using DC current technology at base stations allows lesser electrical power consumption. This DC solution achieved energy efficiency, as it reduces energy conversion losses by at least 10%. Having installing power backup to the base station, it automatically triggered by the control system to continue feeds power to the switchgear in the event of power grid outage.

The Results

The customer is satisfied that the project completed without a hitch and the objectives were meet:
  • Lower Power Consumption
  • Lower Operation & Maintenance Cost
  • Lower Facility Cost as DC Solutions Required Lesser Space
  • Improved Reliability

Furthermore, the timely implementation and completion of this project assisted in the successful rollout of updated 3G and advanced 4G networks in the country. This network deployment is part of the country’s network coverage strategy plan; bringing the network to their citizens and businesses. The implementation also encourages new, different advanced network and mobile products to be developed. Network growth also boosts business operations, which will draw in more foreign investments to help the country progress further.
